Just want to give a shout out and Happy Birthday wishes to my good friend Tony! I know you were trying to keep it a secret – didn’t even mention it on your own blog! But I can’t let the day go by without sending you Happy Birthday wishes. How old are you now – 75? (Just kidding!)

Been enjoying reading your blog – especially the video remix of President Obama’s encounter with the fly! What a riot! Have a great day, man!

My wife has been asking me to look into buying awnings to put over the windows of our house.  I’ve been putting it off.  I can’t really say why I’ve been putting it off; I think maybe it’s one of those “if the wife suggests it, then it must be stupid” ideas that I keep in my head.  But now a few friends have been telling me that they have put awnings over their windows and that it has made a tremendous difference in how much cooler it keeps their house, and how much money it is saving on their air conditioning costs.  So, now I’m starting to think maybe it is something we really should look into doing.  After all, saving money is a good idea, and using less electricity is good for the environment.  I wonder if we can get a tax credit for installing awnings?

I’ve been hearing a lot of people complaining about how the prices of just about everything are going up AGAIN. Everyone is wondering if the prices will settle down. And by that I mean fuel, food, and entertainment. True to the law of supply and demand, the demand for a lot of things increase in the summer. I think that is largely because so many schools let out for summer vacation. I wonder if the public school systems changed to year-round schools, if that would change at all. I think it might!

Usually there are a lot of “help wanted” signs out in windows around time this time of year.  A lot of seasonal work.  Not so this year.  I can’t really say that I’ve seen any at all, except at the local burger joints.  And, of course, the local ice cream stand that is only open in the summer.  I hope that is not a bad omen for the economy!  There are a lot of students that need to make money in the summer to help them pay for their college expenses in the fall!  Especially now that so many colleges are increasing their tuition rates, and the government subsidized loans are not keeping up with the cost of college.  We need more summer jobs out there!

I’ve noticed that a lot of schools are on different schedules, and I wonder about the sense of it all. Lots of kids get out of school in early May, others don’t get out until the third week of June! What is the sense in that? I think it would be a good idea to run school year round, so that the kids don’t forget everything they’ve learned over the school year! I think that the kids would get a better education, which would improve the quality of the work force. And, it would keep idle kids from getting into trouble over their summer break, because they’d be at school!  It would also save parents a lot of money on babysitting fees!
