Looking for a new guitar

Stu told me that his parents promised him a new guitar as a graduation gift when he finishes high school. He is a junior this year, but he is already looking for the one that he wants to ask his parents to purchase for him. He knows they have a budget, and he is trying to stick to their budget. He was asking me for advice on where he coud find the best ibanez selection. I suggested that he try and Google the phrase Ibanez guitars and see what happens.

When Kenny was thinking about taking the latest early retirement offer from the telephone company, he said that he was thinking that he would use the incentive money to move his family down to Florida and try to find a job doing the cabling work for another telephone company like ABC Telecom. He was showing me a magazine that was all about the telecommunications business, and there were a lot of advertisements and listings from companies that were hiring people in the industry.

I was quite amazed to see dozens of listing for employment opportunities for experienced Central Office Equipment Installation Technicians in foreign countries! Kenny explained to me that a lot of the older systems that his work crew had been ripping out of the old central offices were actually being sold to foreign countries for them to use in their telecommunications infrastructure. The equipment that our telephone companies were retiring and “junking out” that was over twenty or thirty years old was actually an “upgrade” to these other countries’ systems!

Just learning that made me stop and think for just a moment about how much technology has advanced over the past few decades, and how we, as citizens of the United States are blessed to have access to the newest technologies. There have been times that I’ve seen television shows, and gone to museum exhibits and learned about third world countries that take things that have been cast off by other countries and ended up using them to improve their lives. The old adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is as true today as it was in my grandparent’s day!

One of the things that has always annoyed me about college is the fact that the students have to pay an arm and a leg for their assigned college books. Being able to buy used textbooks can help to save money on the expense, but even those are expensive, and often the used books aren’t even available to purchase!

A lot of colleges will say that their book store will “buy back” the textbooks at the end of the semester, but in my own experience about half of the time when I have taken my books back to the bookstore for their “buy back” program they end up telling me that they don’t want to buy that particular book back, and so I end up with a text book that I don’t need or want anymore. I hate the thought of throwing it away, so I have kept them on my bookshelves to use as reference books. Some of them have actually ended up being used a few times for that, but much of the time they just take up space and collect dust.

I imagine that it will not be much longer before many of the college books will be available on Kindle, which would be a great way to handle that storage problem. I think that it could save the students some money, and be much more convenient than having to schlep all over the place looking for the book that they need.

Finally found some time to look online to research, as I promised at Easter dinner last night, and find the best cheap postcard printing options for my kid sister’s boyfriend. He is starting his own landscaping company and wants to try various marketing attempts in order to get the word out and get some business drummed up as soon as possible. There is a lot of money out there in this type of business, but a lot of competition to try and get over, around and/or above and I will help him (for my kid sisters sake) in any way that I can.

They have managed to stay together (without a lot of unnecessary drama) for over two years, so this just might be the one. He is a good enough guy to get along with when I see him on occassion. A step up from previous relationships, in the whole families opinion. With that said I guess I better sign off and get my butt in gear and send him the links that I have come up with and see what he says about that before proceeding. The weather is getting nicer with each day that arrives and there a tons of landscapers taking advantage of it.

Earth Day

This year on Monday, April 22nd is a day when every American should seriously think about the world we live in. Our mother earth provides us all with everything we need to live and we should all be taking much better care of her. Unfortunately, this has not always been the case. I do believe we can do better. On this up and coming 43rd anniversary of earth day, I believe we can make our voices heard.

It seems that as we learn more about our environment, we have come to the conclusion that we are doing a lot of harm to it. Our lands, oceans, and skies all show a sign of human activity and the past has shown that this is not a good thing. I hope we can all take a minute to reflect on our own impact on the planet and conceive ways to lesson our impact!

I am glad that more people are jumping on the GREEN Movement that seems to be spreading a bit, but there is so much more that we could and should do. I am even considering switching to a Green webhosting that I was reading about. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.
