Can you remember life before the Internet? (BI) What an extraordinary change to our lives the Internet has become! I can remember that far back (yeah, I’m showing my age!) and I can remember that our family depended heavily on the local yellowpages to find all of the businesses that we needed; from local plumbers and banks to local restaurants and barber shops!

With the advent of the Internet, and the rapid acceptance and dependence of the Internet, I find it so much easier to use the Internet to do a local search for any business than going back to the old paper version! And yes, we DO have the old paper version in the cupboard by the telephone, but I gravitate towards using the Internet first. I really like how once I find the listing that i need I can often get directions to the place if I need them! The paper version doesn’t do that at all!

This Christmas was a little bit on the quiet side this year. Most of the people in our family are finding it more difficult to make their paychecks stretch as far as they need to stretch, so we greatly reduced the gift giving this year. We decorated the house, and had a nice dinner, and played a few games. Thankfully everyone was in a good mood and the house was full of laughter and good camaraderie. All in all, it was a good visit, even if there hardly any material gifts involved.

Last night I was in the mood to snack. I don’t know why, I just seemed like I couldn’t get full! And it didn’t make any sense to me at all because I had eaten plenty of protein, which sticks to my ribs better than anything else. I don’t know, maybe I was just bored, or stressed. All I know is that my stomach was growling at me and I felt hunger pains that just would not stop! I was going nuts trying to find something to eat that would not be terrible for me. Cookies and chips were calling out to me; it was so hard to resist! And I know that experts say to eat fruit, but that makes me even hungrier!

So I scrounged around the pantry and found some microwave popcorn that had been sitting there a long time. It had a “best if used by” date on it that was over a year old. I considered throwing it away, but then I decided I’d pop it and see if it smelled or tasted bad; if so, then I’d toss it away. Well, I think it had a few more “old maids” than normal, but not bad, and it tasted just fine. And today I’m alive and well, so I guess maybe today I’ll eat that second bag of expired popcorn!

It really does my heart good to see that more people are turning to and relying on good old fashioned rain harvestings during these past few years of drought like conditions that we’ve been dealing with. Many people pay dearly for water services and some folks get theirs from their well, either way it takes money to get our much needed water supply to us that we depend on each and every day, while mother nature provides us water that just takes something like a rain barrel to collect to use.

My father used to always have a rain water barrel that he used for our small garden that we all worked so hard in year after year for our home grown fruits and vegetables that my mother loved cooking with. That made a big impression on us for years to come about rain harvesting.

I’m hearing that there are now more rain water barrels are being sold than ever before. Did you know you can find many rain barrels for sale right online at sites like simplyrainbarrels.com has to offer? They have a very large variety of sizes, colors and shapes as well as various price ranges. What I really like is that simplyrainbarrels.com accepts PayPal, I’ve put an end to my credit cards and rely on my PayPal account more and more for online purchases such as this.

When my parents took the family on one of their “we’ve just bought ourselves an RV” trips, we went to some kind of group outing. I guess it was an RV club that they joined. All I remember about it is being bored out of my mind, all of the RVs parked close together in a camp ground and going to a pot luck dinner (we took Swanson’s frozen macaroni and cheese) and then playing a couple of rounds of Bingo. I was very upset because I won the Bingo game where the prize was a curt trailer hitch, and I had no use for one of those! My parents were thrilled, but they didn’t give me anything for it, they just took it from me. I guess maybe that’s why I am not a Bingo fan! Win a dumb prize and have it taken away, why would anyone want to play a game like that!

There was a nationwide recall of garlic bread in Australia a few years ago, including the garlic bread sold by Domino’s Pizza. The recall happened because the bread turned blue when it was baked. The company that makes the garlic bread says that they don’t believe that the bread is a health hazard, but recalled it anyway. They have no explanation as to why it turns blue, they think it has something to do with the type of garlic that they used for this particular batch. I don’t think that makes a lot of sense, I’ve never heard of garlic turning blue when it is baked – and if there WAS a garlic that turns blue when baked it seems to me that would be widely known in the culinary arts industry to begin with. I think it sounds fishy to me! I wonder if they ever found anything out about what caused that!

I really didn’t think I’d like the sugar free candy at all; fearing a nasty aftertaste. But much to my surprise, the candy really isn’t bad at all. I don’t think it will be that hard to switch to it after all! Which sugar free candy is your favorite?

A few weeks ago I purchased some cheese at my local Food Lion. I reached into the fridge over the weekend to cut some of the cheese up to eat. It had not been opened yet, but I noticed that it has mold all over it. I checked out the “Best Used If By date” and it was still a few weeks away.

I was told that if you have a problem with a product and they supply you with a toll free phone number, to call it and inform them of their product’s issue(s). So I did and the lady was very nice and told me that a coupon is on the way in order to replace the cheese. So I have to say “Kudos” to Kraft! They stand behind their products.

Was just talking with a buddy out in Wisconsin. He called to see how we were doing during the hurricane scare. He was telling me about a new beer that he had heard about called “Chick Beer” apparently he knows one of the guys who is involved with this new and interesting beer. He tells me that it will be available only in the next state over from us and he wants me to go and purchase a six pack and give it a try since he knows that I only drink light beer and this is a Premium Light Beer.

It sounded interesting enough, enough to where I Googled “Chick Beer” and found it quickly. It sounds and looks like an interesting concept and I’m curious to see how it is received by the women in the world that enjoy a light beer. I like the fact that they are promising to donate five percent of their profits to charities that empower women.

Check it out!

I really do not think that we need another grocery store in town so I don’t know why they are building a new grocery store ALDI. I mean how many grocery stores does one town need, especially since the next town over has a large amount of them there as well. We all ready have Safeway, Giant, Food Lion, Bloom, Harris-Teeter, Shoppers Warehouse as well as Walmart and Target that sell groceries, even the Rite Aid and Walgreems and CVS have expanded recently and have a good sized grocery section in them in order to keep the grocery money in their store as much as possible.

What we do need is a 24 hour pharmacy and an emergency dentist that is available 24/7. What are these people thinking that are planning all of this for us?
