When we went to Josh and Allie’s barbecue party last weekend we were really entranced by the Pentair pool lamina jets that they had running in their pool during the party. The way that the jets squirted water in an arc across the pool reminded me of the play area in DisneyWorld’s Epcot Center outside the theater that showed the 3D film “Honey I blew up the kids.” Our kids loved playing and running around in those fountains. Funny how things like that can bring back memories of when our kids were young!

Dropped by the Wal-Mart yesterday to buy a couple of plastic storage totes for my wife to store last winters sweaters in, and noticed that all of the Easter candy was on sale for 50% off. Most of the candy looked like some version of Peeps, or chocolate lollipops, and I just kept walking. At the end of the aisle, however, were some Jolly Rancher jelly beans. It has been at least three or four years since I’ve had Jolly Rancher candy of any sort, and I was remembering just how intense the flavor is; so I decided to go ahead and buy two bags of them. I took them home and opened one bag, and put it beside my computer. Every few minutes that I am sitting here typing, I grab two or three jelly beans and pop them in my mouth. The flavors are even more intense than I remembered – I don’t think that this candy is going to last very long around here. I might just have to give the other bag to my wife and ask her to take them to her office to share with her co-workers!

My son drinks those Five Hour Energy drinks, and it worries me. I’ve heard on the news that these energy drinks are not healthy for people at all. In fact I’ve heard that they are down-right dangerous. My wife keeps reassuring me that they are no worse for a person than drinking one cup of coffee, but I find that hard to believe. I’ve asked my son why he doesn’t just drink a cup of coffee if that is all it basically is. His reply is “I don’t like coffee, or tea, and I’m not supposed to drink a soda in front of my clients, so I drink these instead if I need a ‘pick-me-up.’” What do you think of these energy drinks?

This guest post from Josue Nichols

It seems like there are just so many direct tv channels! My grandparents have Direct TV at their house so every time we go there, I will just look through the guide and every channel they have. They actually have a lot of what Direct TV offers, but there are just so many channels! One afternoon, my family and I went to my grandparents’ house after church. I knew right away that meant we would be there the rest of the day. While I was waiting for my grandmother to whip something delicious up for dinner, I just kept channel surfing. I think I spent that entire afternoon doing that. Just watching bits and pieces of different shows, looking at the guide while I watch shows and just taking in as much as I could. Right before dinner, I actually ended up settling on a show on the History channel. It was something about the Civil War. I knew I had a test coming up about the Civil War in school, so I thought the show might help. It was definitely more in depth than what I would have to know for my test. I got so caught up I almost did not hear that dinner was ready.

My wife was telling me that she is feeling a little bit sad that our children have grown too old for the traditions of coloring hard boiled eggs and having an Easter Egg hunt. She used to go to great lengths to hide the eggs around the house and the yard, and she would also hid the children’s Easter Gift Baskets for them to find. She was careful to make sure that all of the baskets were identical so that nobody felt that their basket was inferior to anyone else’s baskets. She was always so careful about that, wanting to treat all of the kids completely fairly.

There were times when I would ask her if she was perhaps doing a disservice to our kids, making sure that they were always treated “fairly” here at home. After all, the kids need to learn that life is not fair. Shouldn’t they learn that here at home? Her answer was always that home was supposed to be the place where the family can get away from all of the wrongs and unfairness and ugliness of the outside world, and she was going to be sure that the kids knew that life was not fair, but she sure as heck was not going to favor one kid over the other just to teach them that life isn’t fair. I think she has a good point, don’t you?
