Today’s Online Tutoring

Posted on August 21st, 2010 by Jerry under Computers and/or Internet, Education and Personal Growth, Friends/Family, Technology and gadgets.

Today’s students are at such an advantage with all that the World Wide Web has to offer them in their educations. I can’t even imagine how my education would have turned if we had had access to the Internet. They now even have Online tutoring for just about ever subject one could need. I certainly could have used some Free math tutoring online back in High School. Math and I just really never hit it off. I don’t know what I’d do with out my calculator that I always have close at hand when ever numbers are being crunched.

I had to rely on my brothers and sisters for help and that didn’t always work out so grand. And I do remember that I did spend a good amount of time staying after school for additional help. My mother did manage to find a nice neighbor that would come over once in a while a lend a hand with some Statistics help, but nothing like jumping online and getting help when ever you need it when it comes to hard core Math answers.

Drafting

My wife has been talking about taking a course in cad drawing.  She spent a large part of her adult life drafting work orders for the telephone company and she really enjoyed doing that type of work.  And she says that she would really like to do that type of work again.  But most of the job wanted ads for that type of work indicate that the succesful candidate will have experience in cad.

Green Inside and Out

Posted on August 14th, 2010 by Jerry under Business, Entertainment and Fun, Friends/Family, Home and garden, Opinion.

I’ve never met anyone with a greener thumb than my own mother. I never really paid that much attention to the house and the yard that we grew up in back then. I mean I knew that we had a nice yard and that the neighbors were always complimenting her on her landscaping ideas and her green thumb, but it was still just a yard to a kid like me that always had to be moving and on the go, usually on my bicycle back then.

We had two very nice outdoor planters at the end of the front walk way that my mother always managed to have something colorful and alive growing in them all year round. I’ve never seen another outddor planter that looks remotely close to them and my mother doesn’t remember where she got them or what even happened to them after we all grew up and left home. My folks were back on their own in a large empty house that they eventually sold and moved across town and down sized a bit.

My mother still likes her outside work, but she has a hard time with the extreme heat that we have all been experiencing this summer. She has focused more on the inside of the house this year rather than the yard and the gardens. She found some nice indoor planters on the Internet that she has placed in various locations around the place and it looks real good. Everything is blooming and it helps the house smell real good. Plants are a good healthy thing to have in your home.

I didn’t get any part of my mother’s green thumb. I have jut the one indoor planter that I received as a Christmas gift years ago.  I’ve tried to grow things in and have long since given up and just use it for an ash tray for visiting smokers that end up in the garage getting their nicotine fix on.

Setting up house

I never realized that our son J was interested in fine linens until we took him shopping last month for the things that he needed for his new apartment.  When we went out I thought it would only take an hour or two to grab a few things and toss them in the shopping cart.  I sure was surprised when we were in the bedding department and he spent at least an hour picking out his bedding.  If it had been me, I would have just grabbed the cheapest set and been done with it!

Creative channelling of nature

One of the reasons that my wife and I enjoy going to trade shows is because we get some really good and creative ideas on how to solve some problems and some great ideas on things like landscaping and decorating.

Last spring when we went to the home and garden show we saw several displays using rain chains as part of the landscaping.  My wife was especially fond of the different garden rain chains that she saw – she especially liked the ones that looked like water was coming out of a watering can.

I liked the gutter rain chain and copper rain chain corner leaderhead that I saw.  I thought that they were great solutions for a couple of the problem drainage areas we have on our roof.

Cleaning out storage chest

Posted on August 12th, 2010 by Jerry under Friends/Family, Life, Parenting.

My wife and I started clearing out some of the clutter in our bedroom this past weekend.  Part of the process included cleaning out the storage chest that we keep various odds and ends in.  Things like future Christmas presents, and birthday cards.  My wife started laughing because she came across the unused baby announcements she had bought when she was pregnant back in 1988!  I told her we may as well save them to use for our grandchildren!

I think that it’s funny

My wife got a big kick out of finding two seperate wedding invitations in the mail today from my cousin Rick and his fiance Jaylin.  One was addressed to me, and one to her.  They were hand addressed by two different people.  I guess there’s just a little bit of confusion going on in the bride’s support network!  Regardless, they are only getting one wedding gift from us!

Medical advancements

I can’t remember how long it has been since Mom could go places without her portable oxygen concentrator in tow. I’m really grateful that she is able to get her oxygen for such reasonable rates.  I don’t think people realize how difficult life can be when you need to have oxygen tubes up your nose all day every day.  But I have to give Mom a lot of credit – she doesn’t let it bring her down.

Are bundles the best

Posted on August 11th, 2010 by Jerry under Business, Friends/Family, Life, Money and Finances, Parenting.

My wife and I have always thought that we would get the cheapest auto insurance by bundling it together with our homeowner insurance.  So that is what we’ve been doing ever since we got married.  Recently we’ve been talking about trying to reduce our expenses and I’ve been shopping around for lower interest rates.  Since our oldest son got a speeding ticket three years ago, I’m afraid that changing companies at this time will only increase our premiums.

Planning ahead

Posted on August 8th, 2010 by Jerry under Computers and/or Internet, Entertainment and Fun, Friends/Family, Life, Opinion, Shopping.

This year we are planning to attend the Elk’s annual Halloween party.  We went last year and had a blast!  The only drawback was that the room was filled with cigarrette smoke, and that made us uncomfortable.  But this year we installed some air filters that will help to clean the air well enough that the smoke shouldn’t be quite so bad.  Personally I’d like to see the Elks mandate smoke-free events, but then the attendence would probably drop down drastically.  My wife thinks that more people would attend, but that doesn’t seem to be the opinion of the people who are in charge of parties!

Last year my wife wore a really sexy cop costume to the party.  She wore a body suit underneath, though, so as not to upset the older ladies!  This year she is planning to buy and wear a sexy pirate costume to the party.  She has quite a collection of sexy Halloween costumes to choose from over the many different Internet stores that sell costumes!

Personally, I like the costumes that my wife sews herself.  She is a very creative woman, and when she sews the costume herself she is guaranteed to show up at the party with a one-of-a-kind costume!  I can remember a few parties that we’ve gone to in the past where several women showed up wearing the same costume, and they were quite unhappy with that situation!

I am guessing that with the popularity of television shows that feature vampires, that there will be a huge “run” on vampire costumes this year.  Last year there were a lot of really fantastic looking vampire costumes at the party, but the costume that took the first prize in the costume contest was really rather disappointing to me – it was a guy dressed like a short-order cook.  I think politics were in play there; a lot of costumes were much better than that!
