I’ve been hearing a lot of people talking lately about how bed bugs are becoming a big problem for homeowners. There have been articles in the newspapers about how easy it is to bring bed bugs and cock roaches home from innocent-appearing places like the grocery store (in bags) and movie theaters (from the upholstery in the theater seats!) Just reading about these kinds of infestations makes me want to give my entire house a good top to bottom cleaning, including carpet cleaning raleigh with a steam cleaner. From what I understand, steam cleaning is the best way to kill pests like that.

For years I’ve been waiting for a time when solar is made easy. Even though solar power has been available for a couple of decades now, the practicality of the technology being within the reach of the average American homeowner has yet to appear on the horizon. For as long as I can remember my wife has taken full advantage of the passive solar energy in the winter by opening the doors and curtains that face the sun during the day to allow the sun’s rays to warm up the house as much as possible, and making sure to close them all again when the sun started to wane. And in the summer, as much as we enjoy having a house full of sunlight, we pull down the window shades and close the doors to the hot sun, to help keep the house cool and to reduce the work and energy usage of the air conditioner.

Even so, we would ultimately like to take better advantage of the newest technology when it becomes within our financial reach, of putting solar panels on our roof to help reduce our electricity usage and to help heat and cool the house. Just the idea of not having to pay the electric company, or the gas company for our lights, heat, and air conditioning gets my juices flowing! My wife has even suggested that we look into getting a small windmill to see if we could generate our own electricity with it to help cut down on our electric bills. With so many people living in our house, and everyone being on a different schedule of wakefulness and sleeping, our lights and climate control are constantly going, so our bills for electricity and climate control are probably a lot higher than many families bills are.

This guest post from Margaret Mills

I do not think I had heard of DirectStarTV until I used it to set up our TV service in our new house. That is often the case when it comes to knowing companies and providers. It seems like you do not pay attention to those things until you have to. I finally had to I guess when we were moving because we needed to figure out what the best possible service was for what we wanted to pay. It ended up being fairly easy to pick out a deal with the local channels and some good extras included with them for a good price. Even though we have our service and we are really happy with it, I still find myself paying a lot more attention when I hear people talking about their TV service provider or other services providers. I think I just do it out of habit. I had to listen to figure out who we should use, but now it is just this habit that I figure could do nothing except help us to figure out if what we have is best.

Dropped by the Wal-Mart yesterday to buy a couple of plastic storage totes for my wife to store last winters sweaters in, and noticed that all of the Easter candy was on sale for 50% off. Most of the candy looked like some version of Peeps, or chocolate lollipops, and I just kept walking. At the end of the aisle, however, were some Jolly Rancher jelly beans. It has been at least three or four years since I’ve had Jolly Rancher candy of any sort, and I was remembering just how intense the flavor is; so I decided to go ahead and buy two bags of them. I took them home and opened one bag, and put it beside my computer. Every few minutes that I am sitting here typing, I grab two or three jelly beans and pop them in my mouth. The flavors are even more intense than I remembered – I don’t think that this candy is going to last very long around here. I might just have to give the other bag to my wife and ask her to take them to her office to share with her co-workers!

Janice was telling me that she was thinking about buying a small motorbike from a vendor on Hipswap, and aked me if I would go with her to check the bike out. She wants to buy it for her sixteen year old daughter that just got her learners permit. Seems that her daughter has no interest in learning how to drive a car, but wants to drive a motorcycle instead. I did not think that you could legally get a motorcycle driver’s license if you did not first have your license to drive a car! Well, this motorbike is only $500 and the owner claims that it has only been run a couple of hours; only needs a tune-up.

I told Janice that if she would set up the meeting for next weekend then I would go take a look at the bike with her. But this weekend just is too busy for me to go anywhere, what with trying to get the house ready for family coming over for Easter dinner and all. I want to get the lawn mowed and the siding power washed and the gardens weeded. And my wife has asked me to shampoo the carpets in the living and dining room as well.
