Jerry Loggins Notes

Notes on life, family and friends by Jerry Loggins

One thing that is really neat about working in a large office is that I have a lot of friends. There always seems to be something going on and new things to hear about. My friend Bob was telling me about how he and his family had spent their summer vacation at an Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotel. He said they had a great time and told me more about it.

Bob has traveled to many places in his life. When it comes to finding the best places to go, I trust his judgment. When he said that Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotels were the place to be, I believed him. Bob liked the fact that the service was great and that the view of the ocean was so nice.

Bob also told me about the great time that the kids had. They went to play on the shores of the ocean and enjoyed the sunny weather. Bob was able to get in a round of golf at one of the local courses and his wife caught up on her shopping. Bob had a serious look on his face when he told me that a great vacation could be found at a Myrtle Beach Hotel. I believe everything he said was true and I am now thinking about taking my family on a trip to Myrtle Beach.

The family is making plans to celebrate my father’s 65th birthday come May. It promises to be a shindig  and I look forward to being there, seeing all the family that are invited and that darn well better show up along with numerous family friends that we have gotten to know and love throughout the years.

People will be coming from all over the country, even a few that are overseas are expected to make an appearance, it should be a fabulous time for all that attend.  The only problem that I see is finding the perfect gift to give to my Dad on his special day. The only thing that I can come up with is finding something boat/fishing related.

Dad has always loved boats, fishing is his passion, but he has all the fishing equipment that he could ever need or want to keep him happy with all that.  My sister has suggested that we kids all go in together and get him some of the new HID Go lights for his favorite fishing boat. He has been really talking it up about these Go lights all year and she has found a good deal on them online. If I can’t come up with any other idea’s in the next month or so I guess I’ll go ahead to commit to them, I know he will enjoy them and all, it’s just that I really wanted to do something on my own this year for some wacky reason.

One of my all-time favorite hiking and camping spots is in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. There is a deep creek that runs around the mountain, several flat and grassy areas good for pitching a tent, and at the top of the mountain is a fire watch tower that anyone can climb and have a great view of four states: Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. There is some great trout fishing in those streams. Huge fish that are trophy quality, although I strongly believe in catch and release.

Back in the days before cell phone cameras, no one would ever believe how big those fish were that I caught up on that mountain. But now I can take a snapshot and have proof of the size of my catch. There are many folks that enjoy the sport of fishing that are posting some pretty impressive catches on their Face Book Walls. Amazing how technology has even managed to effect the bragging stories fishers are (at least it used to) known for telling about “the one that got away” and how they always managed to stretch the length of their catch of the day by at least a few inches.

Junk Car

At the town council meeting the subject of junk cars came up and a law to prohibit keeping junk cars on your property has been proposed. Of course, in the South, the right to have and display “yard cars” is something taken very seriously. So a concerned citizen spoke up and asked for a clear definition of the junk cars that will be prohibited if this ordinance is enacted. This is the list of conditions used to define a junk car: Damaged or defective in that it is inoperable or unsafe to drive – Have flat, missing or totally disassembled tires and wheels – Have extensive body damage or are missing essential body parts – and/or are on the ground surrounded by vegetation.

The ordinance will allow people to have these vehicles only if they enclosed in a building and not visible from the street or any abutting property. Violators will be fined $50 per day for each day the property owner is in violation. It would be nice if they allowed a junk car to be covered by some type of tarp or other covering, like they do in some towns that I have resided in, but they didn’t want anything to do with that idea at this time.

I’ve always liked to go fishing, but I always practice catch and release. I don’t think I have ever have eaten any of the fish I’ve caught. One of the reasons being that many of the area’s fishing holes are posted that it is not safe to eat the fish caught there. Another thing being that I just have a hard time even thinking about eating any critter that has actually looked at me – I would feel very guilty about killing it! But I enjoy eating fresh fish – I just buy it at the grocery store or order it at a restaurant once in a while. I’ve never had the opportunity to fish for salmon, but I bet that would be fun and I’d be more than willing to eat what I catch if I go salmon fishing and it was safe to eat!
