Jason was telling me that he and his friends are planning to go to New England for a week next January. They have not yet decided which resort to stay in, and they are actually going to look into joining a ski club’s group trip to try to get the best deal. They did not get as much use out of their burton snowboards this winter at the local mountains, so they want to get some “almost guaranteed” use of them next winter.

We can always tell when our regular mail carrier isn’t working. We have had the same mail carrier for over 7 years now and he always does a great job getting the right mail to the right person and in the right mailboxes. So when we start getting other people’s mail in our mailbox we can bet our bottom dollar that, for what ever reason, there is a substitute carrier on the job.

I wouldn’t want the job of being a mail carrier these days for a variety of reasons. It must be a real drag to have to get up early and go to work in the rain, hail, snow, sleet or what ever the weather is because we all know that no matter what the weather brings us the mail will be delivered unless of course we have a hurricane or a an earthquake of a large magnitude that brings everything to a dead stop.

Mail carriers are still driving their personal cars out here in the boonies, which means that they have to drive while sitting in the middle of their front seat and stretch all the way over in order to get the mail in and out of all of the mail boxes, which must be a real pain in the neck (and various other body parts as well) but better than getting in and out of the vehicle at every stop. That in itself would keep me from getting a job as a country mail carrier, while the city ones are using the vehicles specifically made with the steering wheel and pedals on the right side instead of on the left.

Last November I sent out two packages certified mail, return receipt requested. That means that the person that I’m sending the package to is supposed to sign a card that says that it was received, and then the Post Office is supposed to return it to me. One of the packages went to New York, and the return card was signed on November 20, and I received the return card a few days later.

The second package was sent to Houston Texas. Last November mind you. It is now the month of February. What was in that package was a garment that needed to be altered. I have already received the altered garment back (and it’s fine thank you.) Yesterday I finally received that card from the Post Office telling me that the package had been delivered to Texas, but no one had signed or dated it! What’s up with that?

When Jon went to the US Virgin Islands over the winter break he stayed with his girlfriend and her parents. He had told us that he was thinking that he might try scuba diving while he was down there, so we were looking forward to seeing photographs of the two of them in their scuba gear and wetsuits underwater looking at all of the beautiful salt water fish and coral reefs.

When he came back from the break we asked him about his scuba diving adventures and he surprised us by telling us that he ended up not going. He said that he had donned a wetsuit and snorkeling gear but was surprisingly quite anxious about being underwater and the way he had to breathe so he decided to pass on the scuba adventures. That really surprised me to hear him say that – he has always been a strong swimmer and I just expected him to say that he loved it and couldn’t wait to do it again! He DID have some very nice pictures of the vacation, though, and we were glad that he had a good time.

My wife is supposed to go to a convention next weekend down to Durham, North Carolina. She has recently been told that she has narcolepsy, a sleeping disorder, and that she is in danger of falling asleep while she is driving a car. As you can imagine, this has put our entire family into a tailspin. If she is in danger of falling asleep while she is driving, then we have to come up with alternative ways for her to get back and forth to work, and to and from the convention.

So we looked into having her take the Megabus from DC to Raleigh/Durham, and then a bus from the station to the hotel. Well the bus stops a couple of blocks away from the hotel, so she could use that for the trip down, but the bus that would return her from the hotel back to the Megabus station does not run on Sunday, so that would not work. A taxi from the bus station to and from the hotel would be very expensive, and since she has never been there before I am a little bit concerned about her being stranded someplace. Another concern is how many suitcases is she going to need to take with her; we don’t know yet what clothes she is going to be packing. We need to find out if she needs to pack any formal wear, or just business/casual attire for the entire weekend.

She’s already found a couple of ladies to share the hotel with the nights that she is going to be there, so that is good. I sure hope none of them snore! She is a very light sleeper. And I hope none of them need to sleep with the television on, either, because she never manages to sleep with any kind of flickering light or noise. That reminds me, I’ll tell her to be sure to pack some ear plugs and a sleeping mask to wear.

Our youngest son found out that she needs to go to the convention and that we’re having issues getting her there, so he volunteered to use a hertz coupon to rent a car, splitting the cost with us, and driving her to and from the convention. It turns out that he has a girlfriend that goes to college at Duke University and he wouldn’t mind going down there and visiting with her for the week-end! Problem solved!
