Tonight we were all feeling too lazy to cook, so we decided to cook up the DiGiorno’s frozen pizza we have had in the freezer for a couple of weeks. It was the rising crust three meat pizza. I had my doubts about whether or not I would like it, but I have to tell you that it was really very good. So good in fact that I’ve put it on the shopping list to buy more. And chances are pretty good that we’ll be eating that pizza a lot more in the future instead of going to the pizza restaurant that costs double the amount that the frozen pizza cost!

I’ve tried their thin crispy crust pizza and didn’t like it at all, so I’m really glad I like their rising crust pizza! It’s nice to know I can have a few of them in the freezer for future times we don’t feel like cooking anything complicated!

Today I went out to the store to buy some nice flowers to put on my grandfather’s grave. He is buried in a nearby cemetery; he was a veteran of the Korean war. He died in his early 50’s of cancer - a very misterious thing since he was a health nut that never smoked. We think now that his cancer was caused by his possible exposure to some dangerous chemicals while he was serving in the war. Be that as it may, I plan to go to the cemetery tomorrow with my grandmother to put some flowers on his grave. I hope the weather is nice!

I voted today, and I hope you did too. I’ve always felt that it was not only a right and a privilege to vote, but it is a duty to vote. I think of how many brave people have died for me to have the right to vote? A right that cannot be taken away as long as I am not convicted of breaking the law. I have always felt a deep obligation, in honor of the brave men and women who have been injured or killed in the line of duty for this country to vote in every Presidential election since I was old enough to vote. And I’ve always felt that if someone did not vote in the election, then he or she has no right to complain about how the President is doing his or her job.

I was reading on the Time.com website that there was a fatal shooting last night in South Carolina. A twelve year old boy was shot to death while trick or treating! The person who shot him used an assault rifle and shot thirty rounds! The assailant has been arrested and charged with murder and assault (he shot his brothers and father that were with him too!) The assailant claims he thought the trick-or-treaters were robbers. But the assailant was not even a resident of the house! That excuse sounds wacky to me; I suspect he was high on something! What a horrible tragedy.

We all want to support our local businesses, because if don’t support them they will close down and we will lose our jobs. Yet our local businesses don’t pay us a living wage, so we are forced to buy things for less money over the Internet! What a catch 22 that is! I hope that when the election is over that the new president reverses a few things so that the large corporations stop shipping our jobs overseas. We are already in deep financial trouble, and we need to work HERE on our shores!

As the economy tightens, more people are finding it difficult to pay their monthly bills. They have mortgages, insurance, auto loans, student loans, credit cards, and utility payments that have to be paid every month. Many people are struggling to meet their monthly financial obligations. Some people are turning to short term loans that charge exorbitant application and set up fees and then high interest rates to boot! Some people are filing for bankruptcy, or going to credit counseling.

It is a sad and scary time. I hope that when the election is over, the economy improves quickly.

Unfortunately I have been very busy the past couple of weeks so I have not been able to “keep up” with all of what’s going on with the big banks, and Wall Street as much as I’d like to be “informed” about the big mess. I know that it is all going to effect each and every one of us in some way, so I like to be informed. I guess I have some homework to do! I did notice in yesterday’s paper that the government is going to be buying shares of some of the big banks. I also heard on the television news that some people are concerned that this big bailout package is bringing our country closer to “socialism” which has been a big “hated” phrase that most people that I know think is a code word for “evil.”

So many people talk about how this country is a democracy, and yet I learned in school that it is NOT a “democracy” it is a “republic” which is different. It would be very interesting to see or hear some news stories about THAT!

From time to time I see an article that sings the praises of telecommuting. I think that telecommuting is a great thing because it saves the employees a lot of time and money when they don’t have to drive to work. The only problem I’ve run into is that some companies only allow telecommuting to a select few management employees, and refuse to allow non-management employees that opportunity. I know quite a few people who feel that they could do their job just fine from home but their company won’t allow it. It seems that the company doesn’t trust the non-management employees to do their work if a manager isn’t standing right over their desks breathing down their necks.

I was hearing that many consumers in Texas are still without their electricity after Hurricane Ike wreaked its havoc on Texas. It has been two weeks! I would hate to think what life would be like in this area without electricity! I love the conveniences electricity brings to my life. I love being able to just flick on a switch, grab a soda from the refrigerator, watch a little television, and be able to shower or do laundry if need be. Without electricity, I would not be pleasant company for very long! I need white noise to sleep - and that takes electricity! If we have a power outage that lasts more than two hours around here, I go nuts! I can only say that going two weeks without electricity would truly be a nightmare for me! I feel bad for all those people who have had to deal with that situation.

Well Wall Street sure has been having its share of troubles lately! I heard someone explain that there are two emotions that drive Wall Street - greed and panic. We’ve been seeing a lot of that lately - in the extreme! I own stock in several companies, and I’ve been careful to NOT see how their stock is doing. In times like these I think it is best to NOT look. When I bought the stock, it was with the intention of holding onto it until I am old enough to retire. Hopefully by the time that comes around, the stock market will have settled down and I will have made a little bit of a profit. The best advice I’ve ever heard anyone give about the stock market (besides buy low and sell high) is to never invest money in the stock market that you can’t afford to lose.

I’m disappointed, but not surprised to hear that was going on. It seems that just about everywhere you look nowadays, you will find corruption at every level of just about any company or government agency. People seem to be “going to the dark side” and doing what feels good instead of what feels right. Very sad.

I was reading that there was another earthquake in China this past weekend, hitting the same fault line that was hit last May that killed so many people. This earthquake has not killed as many people (that we know of yet) but did destroy many buildings. China is asking for assistance in the way of donated tents for housing for their citizens. They are asking for at least 10,000 tents.

I don’t know if any of the tremors were felt in Bejing, but I was just wondering how it would have affected the Olympics if the earthquake happened when the Olympics were being held!

Had to go to the pharmacy today to buy some allergy medicine. What a huge pain in the neck it is to have to go to the counter and present your driver’s license and ask permission to buy allergy medicine! They have to put your name and address and license number and gender and phone number in their database, and then they will only allow you to buy a certain allotment per month. And that allotment is NOT enough to get you through the month! What a huge pain this is, and all because some meth heads use this kind of medicine to make their illegal drugs. What is even more annoying is knowing that they also use drain cleaner and water softener salt to make their drugs, but you don’t have to register to buy THOSE products (yet!)
