Slapstick not funny

Last night my wife was watching America’s Funniest Videos.  I’ve never known her to watch that before!  I was having a snack at the table and started watching it too.  There were some videos that were amusing, like the “birthday strippers” but I was surprised how many videos were on the air that involved people getting hurt.  How is getting hurt funny?  I’ve never really understood how someone getting hurt can be funny at all.  I guess that’s one of the reasons that I never enjoyed slapstick comedy!  Oh sure, a pie in the face is harmless enough, but people getting hurt? Not funny at all.
